Pottery Class
On the edge of Fez’s historic medina, you’ll immerse yourself in the ancient tradition of Moroccan pottery. This intimate workshop connects you with master craftspeople who have preserved these techniques for generations.
Upon arrival at the traditional workshop, the ochre-walled studio, adorned with vibrant finished pieces, sets the perfect atmosphere for your creative journey.
Your experience begins with a brief introduction to Fez pottery history and its distinctive patterns. You’ll prepare your clay, feeling the earthy material transform in your hands as you knead and condition it. Under expert guidance, you’ll learn both wheel techniques and hand-building methods dating back to the 9th century when Fez first became renowned for ceramics.
As your creation takes shape, your instructor demonstrates the iconic decorative patterns that make Moroccan pottery instantly recognizable. Using traditional tools, you’ll carve or imprint designs onto your piece while learning about the natural pigments and glazes used in the final stages.
Though the traditional firing process takes several days in community kilns—where temperatures transform both color and durability—you’ll be able to take your unfired creation home as a unique memento of your experience. Your instructor will carefully wrap your piece for safe transport, preserving your handcrafted connection to this ancient Moroccan art form.
This pottery workshop offers more than just a souvenir—it provides genuine insight into Morocco’s artistic heritage and a meaningful cultural exchange with local artisans who are passionate about sharing their craft with visitors.
