Weaving Class
Step into a world where time-honored craftsmanship meets artistic expression in the heart of Fez’s ancient medina. In this intimate one-hour workshop, you’ll join a master weaver in a traditional workshop tucked away in one of the medina’s countless atmospheric alleyways.
The experience begins as you enter a sunlit courtyard where generations of weavers have practiced their craft. The rhythmic clacking of wooden looms fills the air, a sound unchanged for centuries. The workshop, with its weathered stone walls, provides an authentic backdrop for your introduction to this ancient art form.
As you settle in before your loom, the craftsman will guide you through the fundamentals of traditional Moroccan weaving. You’ll learn to prepare the warp threads and master the basic techniques of weft insertion, watching in wonder as patterns begin to emerge beneath your fingers. The workshop uses locally sourced wool dyed in vibrant colors using traditional methods – from saffron yellows to indigo blues that seem to capture the very essence of Morocco.
In just one hour, you’ll gain not just a new skill, but a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship that has made Fez a UNESCO World Heritage site. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to step away from the role of observer and become an active participant in Morocco’s living cultural heritage.
